What’s your favorite family memory?

My favorite family memory probably wasn’t my favorite growing up..lol. My mom was very big on family trips and exposing her children to different cultures and communities she never got to see as a little girl. So every summer, my mom picked a different family vacation spot. Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Boule etc.. and we always had to go on tours!! Ughhh my childhood self just wanted to go to the beach or water park.. but not my mom, she had us stay at resorts with no TV’s (intentional), go to museums and ALWAYS made us ride public transportation!! I now find myself 20 years later doing the same thing as I travel and explore other countries!!

What's one thing that can instantly make your day better?

 A cupcake!!

I  am a snacker and loveeee sweets!! However, I am trying to be more conscious about what I put in my body!! Health is wealth — at least that’s what they say!

What most people don’t realize, is that with being a vendor we are on the road a lot and this requires a healthy body and immune system.

I intentionally don’t buy sweets at the grocery store, so when I encounter a good cupcake!! It makes me HAPPY!!

If you could only teach one thing to your (future) child, what would it be?

“Find your inner voice and be yourself” It’s so liberating!!

How would your 10-year-old self react to what you do now?

10 year old self: Really? I thought you liked to do hair and wanted to own your own shop!!

(Always wanted to be an entrepreneur one way or another)

What’s your favorite part of the workday?

When I am able to cross everything off of my to do list!! I feel soo accomplished!!

What's one thing that can instantly make your day better?

Seeing my son happy and safe!

What’s the best career decision you’ve ever made?

To leave my teaching career.

What’s your favorite family tradition?

My Christmas Eve Party, my mom always did it while I was growing up and I took it over about 4 years ago. It’s such a good time!

What are you most proud of in the last year?

Being able to make my business survive, better yet thrive during this pandemic.

If you could only teach one thing to your child, what would it be?

You are always enough!

Meet MYKELA Owner of Fashionably Greek. Contributor and Co-Owner of My Favorite Vendor.

What’s the best career decision you’ve ever made?

Quitting my full time chemical engineering job to work for Fashionably Greek full time is definitely the best career decision I have made.  I realized I was working to make someone else wealthy and decided I would use my talents to build generational wealth for my family.

How do you separate your work life from your home life?

Honestly, I struggle with this daily. Moving Fashionably Greek’s daily operations from my home to an office space has definitely provided me with a lot more balance. It created separation between work and home. I believe it’s hard as an entrepreneur to find a good balance because there is “ALWAYS” work that needs to be done! I’m learning to choose the things that must be done on the to do list each day.

If you could only teach one thing to your child, what would it be?

I want to teach London to always believe in yourself regardless of what others may think or say about your idea. If I would have listened to some advice given to me, I would never be the entrepreneur I am today.

What are you most proud of in the last year?

I’m proud that my small business survived a pandemic. I understand that we are absolutely blessed to have been able to sustain during such a tough time.

Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

Germany! My husband is in the Army and recently deployed there so Germany instantly moved up on the bucket list!

What are your hobbies, and how did you get into them?

Finding new ways to make money. I’ve been a little entrepreneur since elementary school. I was one of the top fundraisers for my school not because my parents bought everything in the book but because I would knock on every neighbor’s door and ask for their “support”. I even convinced my mom to take me to Walmart on Friday’s and set up a table to sell my candy for the school and I was only in the 4th grade. I have always thought outside of the box.

How would your 10-year-younger self react to what you do now?

GIRL... she would say, I remember when they doubted you. I remember when they lacked enthusiasm for your dreams. But most of all, I remember when they whispered! They whispered skeptically because they lacked knowledge and because they lack knowledge, they lack vision. Don’t forget how we got here sis... continue to pray for wisdom, pray for decrement.

What’s your favorite part of the workday?

I LOVE the early morning! I get up from 4:30am- 6am the latest. It’s the most quiet time of day. I talk to God, I get all my thoughts organized and breathe deep.

What makes you proud of your family?

In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation declared more than three million slaves living in the Confederate states to be free. More than two years would pass, as Texas Slave owners purposefully neglected to inform African Americans living in Texas that they were in fact free. It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. I am proud to say I am a direct descendent of the McAllister Slave Plantation in Galveston, TX now owned and deeded to my family.

What type of music are you into?

My favorite music by far is Soca. Soca reminds me of happy times with my family & friends. Soca is a place where life’s problems don’t exist, only the culture and vibes matter!

Who do you admire most in the world?

My mother! My mothers love and selflessness throughout my life is by far the most beautiful and admiral thing have experienced after God’s love! She is the  best to ever do it:)
